Scary Slow-Cooked Chili

1 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef
lb bulk Italian pork sausage
1 medium onion, chopped (about ⁄₂ cup)
1 can (28 oz) whole tomatoes, undrained, cut up
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 to 1⁄₂ teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
1 can (15 oz) spicy chili beans in sauce
1 can (15 oz) chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained, rinsed
6 slices (1 oz each) American cheese


Serves: 6


1. In 10-inch skillet, cook beef, sausage and onion over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently, until beef is thoroughly cooked and sausage is no longer pink; drain.

2. In 3½- to 4-quart slow cooker, mix beef mixture and all remaining ingredients except cheese.

3. Cover; cook on Low heat setting 7 to 8 hours. Use a Halloweenthemed cookie cutter to cut out shape from cheese. Top individual servings with cut outs.
