Classic Chinese Style Lion's Head Soup

This is certainly one soup recipe that is going to make you feel like the king of your household. This is a traditional soup often serve in many Chinese homes during the holiday season.


1 pound of pork, ground
1 egg, large in size
1 tbsp. of cornstarch
2 tsp. of oil, sesame variety
1 tbsp. of ginger root, fresh and minced
tsp. of msg, optional
1 tsp. of salt
2 green onion, finely chopped and evenly divided
1 tbsp. of vegetable oil
1 head of cabbage, napa style, cored and cut into small chunks
2 cups of chicken broth, low sodium kind
2 cups of water
1 tbsp. of soy sauce
2 tsp. of sesame oil


Preparation time: 35 minutes
Serves: 4


Mix together your first seven ingredients in a large sized bowl. Mix until thoroughly combined.

Using your hands, mix ingredients together until they are evenly combine. Set aside for later use.

Then heat up your vegetable oil in a large sized wok or large sized skillet over high heat. Once your oil is hot, fry up your cabbage carefully until it begins to wilt. Make sure that you stir constantly to prevent the cabbage from burning. This will take about 2 to 3 minutes.

Next pour in your broth, water, and soy sauce. Stir to combine with your mixture evenly. Bring your soup to a rolling boil, before lowering the heat to medium.

Using a spoon form your meat mixture into thick balls. Drop them carefully into your soup. Cover your soup with a lid and allow it to simmer for at least 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and pour into a few soup bowls. Garnish your soup with your remaining green onions and a drizzle of sesame oil and serve.
