Pear Chocolate Cake

1 cup (225 g) margarine or butter
1 cups (340 g) sugar
1 cup (250 ml) water
3 tbsp cocoa powder
Vanilla extract
2 cups (220 g) flour
2 tsp baking powder
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites
23 pears, fresh or canned

1.   Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

2.   In a saucepan on low heat, combine the margarine, sugar, water, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract, stirring with a wooden spoon until the sugar melts and the ingredients are well-combined.

3.   Let the mixture cool. Add in the flour, baking powder, 4 egg yolks (one at a time) beaten egg whites, and stir with a wooden spoon.

4.   Grease a loaf pan and pour the batter about ¾ to the top. Place the peeled pear wedges on top of the cake, pressing slightly so they are half submerged.

5.   Bake in the oven for 35–40 minutes. Alternately, you can make icing from the mixture prepared in step 2. Set aside a third of the mixture and follow the rest of the directions. After baking the cake, drizzle the icing on top.
