100 g (4 oz) butter
325 g (12 oz) icing sugar, sifted
Few drops of vanilla essence
1 teaspoon (5 ml) hot water
15 cm (6 inch) square sponge cake
1.1 kg (2 lb) ready-to-roll fondant icing
Blue, black, green, brown, pink and yellow food colouring
teaspoon gum tragacanth
Silver food paint

25 cm (10 inch) square silver cake board
Fine paintbrush

1 To make the buttercream: cream together the butter, 225 g (8 oz) of the icing sugar, the vanilla essence and water.

2 Cut the cake in half vertically and trim the edges to soften them. Using the tip of a knife, mark a rectangle on top of one half, leaving a 2.5 cm (1 inch) border around the edge. Cut out to a depth of 1 cm ( inch). Spread buttercream over both halves.

3 Roll out 450 g (1 lb) of the fondant on a surface dusted with icing sugar and use it to cover each half cake. Using a little buttercream, sandwich the halves together to make the sink unit.

4 Dampen the cake board. Roll out 325 g (12 oz) of the fondant and cover the cake board. Using the back of a knife, mark squares diagonally across the fondant on the board. Trim the edges and position the sink on the board.

5 In a small bowl, mix the remaining icing sugar with 3 tablespoons (45 ml) cold water and a little blue food colouring. Pour into the sink until level with the top edge. Cover the remaining blue icing with clingfilm and reserve.

6 Mix a little water with some black food colouring and paint every second square on the board to create a tiled effect.

7 Knead the gum tragacanth into the remaining fondant and use a little to make the taps, tools and door. Leave to dry. Divide the remaining fondant into several pieces and colour appropriately, as shown, below right, then use to shape the plumber's body and bag.

8 Put some of the tools in the bag and the remainder on the cake board. Paint the tools and taps silver. Fix the door to the sink with water. Paint behind the door black and paint the details on the cupboard using yellow food colouring. Use the reserved blue icing to pour over the edge of the sink and make puddles on the board.
