Asparagus Stir-Fry

Enjoy the short season of fresh asparagus with this colorful stir-fried side dish.


1 pound (450 g) fresh asparagus
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
2 green onions, sliced
red bell pepper, seeded and sliced
cup (60 ml) water
teaspoon sesame oil (optional)


Serves: 4


Trim tough asparagus ends and cut diagonally into 1½-inch (4-cm) pieces. In a wok or large skillet, heat oil. Add garlic and ginger; cook, stirring, about 30 seconds. Add five­-spice powder, green onions, bell pepper, asparagus and water. Stir-fry until vegetables are tender-crisp, about 3 minutes. If desired, add sesame oil to edge of pan and toss vegetables to mix.
