Try this for breakfast. It needs to be started the day before and will keep for several days in the refrigerator. Make up your own selection of mixed dried fruit, if you prefer.

100g/4oz dried apricots
100g/4oz dried apple rings
100g/4oz dried pears
100g/4oz dried figs
50g/2oz dried cherries
4 cloves
2 allspice berries
1 stick of cinnamon
finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange
275ml/½pt weak tea
150ml/¼pt water
15g/½oz soft brown sugar
40g/1½oz dried pastina (any tiny shapes)

Serves: 6

Place the dried fruit in a bowl with the spices, orange zest and juice, tea and water. Cover and leave to soak overnight.

The next day, spoon the compote into a saucepan, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes, adding a little more water if necessary.

Stir in the brown sugar and pastina and cook for a further 8-10 minutes, until the pastina is tender. Serve warm or cold.
